Orientation for New Students Isn't Over

The freshmen are registered for classes and settling in their new routines -- and they've even heard a lecture or three about time management. But guess what -- the job isn't done. More and more colleges are viewing the entire first year as a crucial time for teaching students not only academic work, but how they can navigate their college years and succeed over time.

On Wednesday, September 19, at 1 p.m. Eastern, Mary Stuart Hunter, one of the leading experts on promoting success in the first year of college, will discuss:

  • Why the transition to college is so difficult for students of all ability levels.
  • What students paid attention to -- and ignored -- during their orientation week before classes.
  • The predictable phases of the first year student experience.
  • The latest research on first year student success and retention and what works (and doesn't).
  • The components of a college-wide first year program.
  • Why retention may be a misguided institutional goal.
  • How to both encourage academic success and teach important out-of-the-classroom skills.
  • What faculty can do to enhance student success and learning.
  • How to evaluate your efforts.

The conference is ideal for:

  • Student affairs professionals
  • Deans of students
  • Retention and assessment officials
  • Provosts, academic deans and department chairs
  • Any higher educator concerned about student success and learning for first year students

Mary Stuart Hunter's presentation will be followed by a session in which she'll answer questions posed by participants in the audio conference. The entire event will last one hour.

The "Orientation For New Students Isn't Over" audio conference costs $175 for a single telephone line; listen yourself or with a group around a conference table.
