The Threat of H1N1 Outbreaks: What Your Campus Needs to Know

The arrival of the H1N1 virus on campuses at the end of the last academic year has many campus officials wondering what to expect this fall. Pandemics typically come in waves over an 18 month to two year period; an earlier, milder wave can be followed by a more severe wave, as was the case in 1918. Since outbreaks have continued throughout the summer in the United States, public health experts are concerned that the fall flu season could be a more severe one. While medical professionals consider issues of health care, what should student affairs, communications and academic professionals be doing to plan for possible outbreaks?

On Thursday, August 20, at 1 p.m. Eastern time, Anita Barkin -- an expert on campus responses to pandemics -- will lead you through the issues facing campuses.

Among the topics they will cover:

• An overview of the H1N1 virus (designed to be understandable to those who aren’t health professionals).
• The key planning that should be taking place now in units beyond health centers.
• The kinds of decisions that need to be made by student affairs, academic affairs and communications professionals.
• How to keep everyone informed – on campus and off – in ways that provide necessary information without creating panic.
• The kinds of structures that promote good decision making.
• How to consider whether to temporarily suspend classes and activities and/or evacuate residence halls.
• Lessons learned from the campuses that faced outbreaks in the spring.

The program will feature a 30-minute presentation and a 30-minute question-and-answer period. The entire program will last one hour.

The conference is ideal for:

• Student affairs
• Residence life
• Academic affairs
• Department chairs and deans
• Public relations
• Senior administrators
